John: The Mystagogic Gospel

Welcome to our very first session of John The Mystagogic Gospel. You have in front of you a monstrous book. Please do not be frightened. Let me quickly tell you very quick we did not ever start out to write a commentary on the Gospel of John there is a group that meets here of people just liked you on Thursday mornings and we started through the Gospel of John and in fact I didn’t really even have much notes when we started somehow in the process by the time we got to the seventh chapter of John the notes began being written and the next thing we knew we had two volumes of notes and I had to go back and try to recreate notes on the first six chapters it was never intended to be what became so all I can do is it’s either by God’s grace or my stupidity I don’t know which that it is it has come to pass it is not an academic study and we’re going to talk about that here so I’m glad that you’re here and we’re going to get started together you have in front of you where you’re sitting one of these little handouts if you’ll look to the back page first we’re beginning this evening we are going to try to cover together the first twelve chapters of the Gospel of John in order to do that as you’ll notice there we’re going to use the semester approach as a way of thinking about it first semester is going to meet 15 times and then we will come back after the new year and do another 15 times and we will have finished that volume that is in front of you so we’re going to just take bite-sized pieces to work our way through and we will have finished the first half of the Gospel of John the Gospel of John automatically divides itself into two halves you will see that as we go through and we now have in front of us this first volume one which covers the first half of the Gospel of John God willing a year from now we will start volume two and work on the second half of John and make our way through that’s the blueprint now you’re going I didn’t sign on for 25 years I understand that those that were in that class the first time didn’t sign on for four years we’ve at least reduced it to two so we’re doing the best we can we are all adults here we all have busy lives well understand you’re not committing yourself to being here every Monday night things will happen and you may have to miss I will say to you if you can make the commitment that you want to come and you will try to guard your schedule on Monday nights that you will find it easier to get in the habit of coming and of being able to grow with the group so it will be helpful to you but we also know that someone’s going to need to miss occasionally so that’s that’s going to happen and it’s okay you have all the content in front of you so you can read in between and so forth there will be no homework assignments so we’re going to come and go over the material in class and have an opportunity to learn together secondly let me say in a group this size questions are almost impossible if we start asking questions we’ll never get through one chapter let alone twelve chapters of the Gospel of John I am available either by email or telephone and in the office Monday through Friday let’s say at 10:00 a.m. so at least have a chance to come and get in the office before the phone starts ringing at 10:00 to 5:00 Monday through Friday except on Thursdays and I teach the other class on Thursdays you can call me and we can talk together and over whatever we’re talking about or any questions that you might have okay okay if that’s okay then why don’t we just go ahead and begin to get started this evening let me say this as well we represent different ages different academic backgrounds different levels of desire we’re going to try to move at a pace that will accommodate the average that means we’re not going to race ahead though you may read as far ahead as you wish and we may move just a little bit faster than you wanted us to move but I have to kind of find where that pace is also this class if you will is an outgrowth of a seminar approach where we moved up this pace of the slowest person in the room we can’t do that here but we will have to find our pace as a group and that means it’s going to be a little trial and error to see how fast we can go we go too fast it just went in one ear and out the other if we go too slow we’ll never get done so we’re going to find the pay it works for us as a group so I’m asking you to have some patient with us as we do this and give a little slack for the person sitting beside you that might not be moving as fast as you or is moving faster so we’ll try to go together for this okay so and also in your booklet I want you to notice if you have a syllabus that sounds awfully academic I know that’s just a way to say we have structured our time together and you will notice that tonight we’re going to see if we can cover in the introduction and the first four articles that deal with what is mr. Godsey in the first place that’s where we’re going to start and then you can see what we want to cover next week and so and we’re going to begin laying a background for what it is we’re doing this is going to serve two purposes number one it’s going to introduce us to our topic number two it’s going to get us used to coming on Monday nights and once that pace is beginning to be there then in week number what is it number six we will actually start with the first chapter of the Gospel of John secondly unlike the seminar we have now included in your material the complete Gospel of John as we get to each chapter so we do that because when you use the Orthodox Study Bible we use the Septuagint Old Testament which is not like the Protestant Bible the Protestant Bible has only 39 books the Orthodox Study Bible Old Testaments going to have 55 books they’re in a different sequence than the Protestant Bible and they have different names so if we were to use our Bible and I ask you to turn to fourth kingdoms we’re all lost even those of us that knew the Old Testament is a Protestant so in order to speed us along and not spend ten minutes trying to find the passage every passage is in and so for the sake of the speed of the group it’s in here I would hope that when you go home you’ll have your own Bible and begin to look these up and find them in the in your own Bible as well but that’s how the course is going to work that’s just the mechanics of it likewise let me say that you have the revised version when I when we quit the first time and finished I said that didn’t exist much on the first chapter I heard Lee put together a as much of an outline as I could so that it was there some medical issues have intervened and I was unable to do many more than that for almost a year and was given the opportunity this summer to begin working on it again and so you now have the revised version that has about 60 more pages in it that’s essentially in those first six chapters that didn’t really exist so that’s that’s why you have what you have and now let’s actually turn to page 17 how’s that page 17 also we’re going to see how we need to work out Quinn did have a break I think Margaret has made God bless Margaret for coffee she’s made coffee and at some point as adults maybe you get up and get a cup of coffee once we’ve done that once or twice without disturbing the peace of pillow around you that’ll that’s okay page 17 Christianity is in the first place and Oriental religion comes from the east it is a mystical religion these assertions sound strange today in an age when it is generally assumed that to be a Christian means to live a good life a moral life these words first written in 1982 point to the real issue in reading the Gospel of John the assumption of what Christianity is creates a preconceived expectation of the veldt and shown the the worldview in which Christian writings exist we are going to be talking about the mr. Gajic world you see we know things by a variety of ways we know which foods we like by tasting them we know our ABCs because we learned them by repetition as children we know who our cousins are because we’ve met them and played with them we know about ancient Babylon because we’ve read about it in a book we know about the Nazis in Nuremberg because we’ve lived there we know about internal organs because we dissected a frog in a biology class so there is an academic way of knowing things there is a scientific method of knowing things but there is also the mystic Gajic of knowing things as well just as there are teachers and professors who instruct in the academic and scientific world there are mr. gags who initiate or guide us into the mysteries the English word mystery comes from the Greek language in the Greek language and I am NOT a native Greek I learned it from the American way of learning Greek and so if I don’t pronounce these words the way that a native-born Greek is you’ll have to forgive me at least it’s written correctly I think in your text in the Greek language meu means to close the mouth holding your like holding your finger to your lips and saying it’s like this that means you oh it means that’s what it means and from that word mu o we get that word is this word and from that we get make that word mysterion which which means a secret except if we don’t translate it secret and we just make the alphabet into our alphabet we get M Y s te RI o in mysterion which is where the English word mystery comes from ha ha there’s a secret here there’s a mystery here a mystery is a secret that remains a secret and is not told to everyone also from the root word Shh we get another word you those which transliterate sin 2 m YT h OS mythos from which we get the word myth a myth a myth is a story that contains a secret or a story that reveals a hidden truth and finally from the root word you make a verb out of it and it means to initiate into the secret meaning so if there is a story with a hidden meaning or a secret meaning and I tell you the hidden meaning I have initiated you into the meaning that’s there and we don’t tell that to everybody in in in the world and that brings you to on the bottom of the next page – that funny-looking word mister go Jay mister go gay mister go goes however we want to say it is the person who initiates us into the mystery background from the Greek words all we’re done now let me give you an example from your own childhood we’ve all heard about the little pigs and in fact we all remember the details quite well how many pigs are there in the story 3 we all know that nobody ever misses that question there are three little pigs and the bad guy is a wolf wow this is great I mean I have a feeling you didn’t go read the book yesterday and from your memory since you were how old the details of that story have stuck with you we realized that they built three different houses what one out of straw one out of sticks one out of bricks the big bad wolf comes blows them down they blows it down the story is entertaining but there is a point to the story that is hidden in it certainly the story would remind little children there are dangerous people in the world it reminds them to seek shelter when in danger and it would also teach that there are some shelters that are better than others because they were built with better building materials so all of these are kind of secret messages that are hidden within the story but a deeper meaning hidden within the story is that life will confront us with threats and disasters over which we have no control therefore we must be very careful of the values we choose in building our lives lives built with solid values on solid foundations have the best chance of surviving the crises of life that would be a myth a story with a hidden meaning with a lot of different hidden meanings but at its heart a very serious meaning but there is a difference between a myth a mythos a story with a secret meaning hidden within it and a mysterion a mystery a reality that may be experienced that cannot be explained a mist agog is not a revealer of Secrets he is a guide into the mysterion into the mystery as he takes us deeper into the mystery the very events he describes presents themselves simultaneously with us in the present we are part of the events participants in the events as we participate no matter how fleetingly in the event itself John’s Gospel is mr. Gajic the very events being described are presented to us and are present and accessible for us to enter and experience not as an external voyeur but as an internal participant now you don’t relax you don’t have to understand anything I just said really I’m just letting you know I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore that that’s the whole point of what we’re doing tonight is to get you comfortable to not being in Kansas and that’s not a negative one the state of Kansas that’s the Wizard of Oz of course we become part of the event who we are and what we know are at that moment one and the same there is no distance between what we know and who we are in those moments we may not be able to articulate what we know or even who we now know we are but we know and it is enough that encounter those experiences are going to happen to us over the next 15 the next 30 weeks as we just walk together through the Gospel of John that is the mr. Gajic experience whether we can put it into words or not John is the mist agog by God’s grace he has written a mr. Gajic gospel a gospel in which every event being described and presented are alive and eternally present and accessible to those desiring to go deeper into the mystery perhaps this little poem or comments from Blaise Pascal will that kind of sum it up for us the hidden God openly appearing to those who look for him with all their heart while hiding from those who run from him with all their heart God governs human knowledge of his presence he gives signs that are visible to those who search for him and yet invisible to those who are indifferent to him to those who wish to see God gives sufficient light to those who do not wish to see he gives sufficient darkness that brings us to chapter two together then that wasn’t too painful in the early church now we’re going to talk about catechism and mr. Godsey part one in the early church Christians had no concern for any sacred geography no temples there was no specific religious interest in the places where Jesus had lived there were no pilgrimages the old religion had its thousand sacred places and temples for the Christians all this was passed and gone there was no need for temples built of stone Christ’s body the church itself the new people gathered in him was the only real temple destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up Jesus said in the Gospel of John the church itself was the new and heavenly Jerusalem the church in Jerusalem was by contrast unimportant the fact that Christ comes and his present was far more significant than the places where he had been the historical reality of Christ was of course the undisputed ground of the early Christians faith yet they did not so much remember him as know he was with them and in him was the end of all religion and as we go through let me throw out a quick note as we go through you’re going to notice there’s mistakes because it hasn’t been proofed well yet and I’m going to tell you there was a phrase left out at the bottom of the page and in him was the end of all religion because he himself was the answer to all religions to all human hunger for God because in him the life that was lost by man and which could only be symbolized signified asked for in religion was restored to men how many of you needed me to repeat that little part so you put it in your notes in him was the end of all religion here’s the insert because he himself was the answer to all religion now I’m back to where I quit the synoptic Gospels the word synoptic means to see alike optic eyes sinned together to see it like the same approach the synoptic Gospels are Matthew Mark and Luke they present the historical reality of Christ and give the undisputed ground of our Christian faith how many are lost at this very moment just a few of us what page are we on in your book say it again 21:21 the synoptic Gospels Matthew Mark and Luke present the historical reality of Christ and give the undisputed ground of our Christian faith the Catechism of the early church taught this historical reality and undisputed ground to new converts before they were baptized it was the Catechism that’s what we teach before you’re baptized the Catechism the instruction that became the basis for Mark’s Gospel and it was Mark’s Gospel that provided the framework for Matthew and Luke to this day they catechesis of the church comes primarily from the synoptic Gospels the oral instruction took place in two stages the oral instruction of the church is going to take place in two stages the ancient church use the the word Passover the word Passover in Hebrew is P sock you put that into Greek and it’s pasta and that is the word that the Eastern Church has always used the Western Church uses the word Easter so when I say pasta I mean what the West means by Easter so we have pasta and that pasta all converts were baptized on Holy Saturday before we had pasta beginning at midnight Easter service held at midnight in which they would receive their first Eucharist so you had baptism and Eucharist centering here on Holy Saturday of Holy Week Holy Week would have been the week immediately before that Sunday pasta Sunday and then we had a period here that we call Great Lent that’s where we’re talking about now the oral instruction took places in two stages the first stage of instruction catechesis occurred during the seven weeks of Lent and Holy Week prior to their baptism chrismation on Holy Saturday the catechumens were called Fortas Zalman oi to be enlightened ones photo Zalman Owen after their baptism and first Eucharist the newly baptized were called neophyte estoy the newly enlightened ones they now entered the second stage of instruction mr. Godsey so here is pasca all of this catechesis learning the story of christ the from his baptism all the way up to Holy Week and then here getting baptized and receiving the body and blood of Christ at Eucharist is now going to be followed on this side by mr. Gogi mr. Gajic instruction up to the day of Pentecost 50 days after posture during the seven weeks following pasta the newly baptized then received mr. Gajic instruction into the meaning of their faith and into experiencing the presence of the risen Savior in their lives the ancient mr. Gajic instruction of the church is found in John’s Gospel the synoptic Gospels grew out of the linton catechesis of those preparing for baptism the Synoptics make sure believers know the story of Jesus John’s mr. Gajic gospel grew out of the mr. Gajic instruction of the newly baptized given between paska and Pentecost the mr. Gajic gospel takes believers into a deeper understanding of the resurrected Jesus who is present in our myths today John created a mr. Gajic gospel that allowed his listeners to participate in ER into and experience the one who is truth itself the truth that is the gospel you see there is no past tense to the resurrection the resurrection is transformative the risen Savior still opens the eyes of believers to understand the Scriptures Jesus was not an add-on to the ancient Israelite story he is the story all along the things written in the Old Testament are about Jesus even as Peter took his stand with the Apostles on the day of Pentecost John took his stand with Peter and Paul Matthew Mark and Luke and proclaimed the gospel shared in woman within the church you search the Scriptures for in them you think you have eternal life and these are they which testify of me but you are not willing to come to me that you may have life John’s Gospel is not a book to be studied John did not write more scripture to be searched it isn’t the words on the written page that give life John’s Gospel is mr. Gajic it offers the opportunity to enter into and experience the very things being described and discussed now there is value in reading John’s Gospel piously just just reading it and there is value in reading it academically but for those desiring to enter into the fullness of this gospel and for those asking for more than what they have Jesus still says come and see John’s Gospel is mr. Godsey he offers a journey to be taken a journey to see Jesus 2,000 years later hungry and thirsty people still come saying sir we wish to see Jesus the experience and illumination gained remain ineffable and cannot be quantified or reduced to academic conclusions or literary documents this is a journey not to understand a book but a journey to meet a person this is a journey to see Jesus it is also a journey with Jesus it is a journey into the mystery of his truth mr. Godsey Cassidy and catechism and mr. Godsey part two am i moving too quickly we okay the church existed prior to the pages of the New Testament being written the church was first and foremost and remains to this day a worshiping community 50 days after the resurrection as the church worshiped the Holy Spirit descended upon them and three thousand fellow Jews converted to the faith in addition to being a worshiping community the church now became a teaching community instructing the new believers in the Apostolic Faith the new converts were baptized and admitted to the chalice to receive the Eucharist the first task was to instruct the converts into the life of Jesus especially his baptism an institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper this task came to be known as catechesis the second task was to instruct the newly baptized into the deeper mystic living of the gospel this task came to be known as mr. Gogi from its beginning the church developed an instructional methodology comprised of both catechesis and mr. Godsey thirty-five to forty years after the resurrection mark used the catechesis of his church to create the Gospel of Mark the two topics of the catechesis that form the basic structure of mark’s gospel is the baptism and then the public ministry of Jesus and the events of Holy Week so we start here Holy Week was baptism and holy would does the events of Holy Week the Last Supper so you take the Baptism and bring it over to here which is where mark will start his gospel with the baptism then you’re going to have inserted now the public ministry of Christ and then it’s going to bring us back to the events of Holy Week and you’ve got a schematic outline of the Gospel of Mark that’s based on this catechesis tells us the story and flesh is it out with more details out of the life of Christ and the teaching of Christ one of the things that happens and we’ll spot this I’ll tell it to you now just so every time we hit it then you’ll know that it’s been it’s coming back the Gospel of Mark will move the baptism out so it can tell us the rest of the story of Jesus but this break right here when it ends Jesus returned to the place of his baptism so that in the Gospel of Mark you have Jesus at the Jordan River being baptized you have the whole episode of his ministry being taught and at the conclusion of the telling of his public ministry he will come back to where he was baptized and then from there he will go to Jerusalem and you have the details of the Last Supper the last week of his life and so you have baptism return to that spot marking then the end of that part of the gospel and then the events of Holy Week that are going to follow so it’s this the kind of the bookends on this part of the gospel you start with baptism you end where that happened and then you go to Holy Week that you can see the two events separated Jesus decision – I’m at the bottom of the next page I think Jesus decision to leave the safety of the East Bank have I lost you what page that we only defend it got it Jesus decision to leave the safety of the East Bank cross back over the Jordan River and head towards Jerusalem turns the catechesis and the gospel towards the events of Holy Week between the East Bank and Jerusalem was the city of Jericho on the west bank of the Jordan jesus heals blind bartimaeus in Jericho before approaching Jerusalem on Palm Sunday Matthew and Luke took marks catechesis gospel stretched it even further apart and inserted additional teaching material from the life of Jesus almost all of the parables are going to be found in Matthew and Luke and so they took Luke they took mark and pulled him apart like this and they’ve inserted the parables and that’s why you have Matthew which follows the same itinerary but has a lot more material teaching and all the parables in it and Luke does likewise pulls mark apart inserts different parables and then you have these larger Gospels of Matthew and Luke Matthew and Luke took marks catechesis stretched it apart and inserted the additional material Matthew and Luke kept the two divisions of the catechesis starting with the baptism and the events of Holy Week and we have the same return between the two events that they’re talking about it will will spot this I’m just giving you a heads up I want you to see the difference between catechism and mr. Kaji and how the catechism of the church survives in the Gospel of Mark and then in the Gospel of Matthew and in the Gospel of Luke so I’m asking you to begin to see what you haven’t seen in these Gospels before Wow Kiley I can’t do that I know oh I’m just letting you know what’s ahead this is gonna be fun we’re gonna watch this happen well I’m not smart enough to be in here with the book yes you are Christianity is not for professionals it’s not for the monks and nuns only it’s not for those guys who wear a collar only it’s for us and if it’s not for us and why are we here it should be of great comfort to you that this big thick book in front of you came into existence because of a group of people just like you showing up every Thursday while we did this together this is the product of a group of people just like you doing what we’re now doing we are all smart enough and we’re going to see that we all have an anointing from God through the Holy Spirit that allows us to see and allows us to know the things of God it’s all coming but we got to start here the train starts slow getting out of the track to get us moving okay I got a hurry I’m sorry so that is the point the twofold nature provides the internal structure as well as the basic content of the Gospels of Matthew Mark and Luke this connection between the oral catechesis of the church and the written said not synoptic Gospels is still readily visible today not if you’re not a member of the Orthodox Church you’re just going to have to get be along for the ride and enjoy this because we’re going to talk about stuff that’s you’re unfamiliar with those of you that are Orthodox I’m going to talk about stuff you’re familiar with and you don’t know you’re familiar with it so we’re all on the same boat it’s going to be okay and it is this we have a lectionary that has gospel readings that are read every Sunday of the year and we start reading them from Pentecost on and it’s going to be the public ministry of Jesus Adam primarily Matthew Mark and Luke the catechesis as it reminds us of the story but when we approach Great Lent the last gospel and I’m going to look at it’s written down I’m it’s going to tell you so you’re not lost when we read it the last gospel in the church before the first gospel of Great Lent first gospel of Great Lent any what’s the docks remember which one it is well I’m putting you on the spot right shame on me this is the Pharisee in the publican I think okay I’m like I didn’t look it up so I’m hopeful the last gospel read before the first gospel of Great Lent is Zacchaeus in Jericho come down Jesus has finished his public ministry he returned to the east bank where he was baptized and he left the east bank crossed the Jordan River to the first town which is Jericho on his way to Jerusalem to die it’s in every gospel the last place before he goes to Jerusalem is on the east bank of the Jordan River and in Matthew Mark and Luke the first place he stopped on his way on his way to Jerusalem to die is Jericho Zacchaeus come down and that’s the last gospel before we start great lent the minute you know and here’s that case you know we’ve crossed the Jordan River we’ve left the public ministry of Jesus behind Holy Week is coming we’re on our way to go with Christ to Jerusalem to the Upper Room the Last Supper and witness of crucifixion and the resurrection of our Savior so that little schematic I just told you is in the Gospel of Mark Luke Matthew and John is also in the reading of the Gospels inside the Orthodox Church the signal of the division of the two parts the public ministry part and then the Holy Week part is going to the east bank and crossing the Jordan River headed to Jerusalem now we’re going to see that in John’s Gospel he doesn’t he doesn’t mention Jericho we end up in Bethany instead for the heat raising of Lazarus from the dead but before he went to Bethany to raise Lazarus he was on the east bank and has crossed over and is now headed to Jerusalem to die it’s the same story same breaking point okay I just this is exciting stuff does it change your salvation no but it lets you know there’s a whole lot in your Bible you’ve never seen there’s a whole lot in the the cycle of the reading of the scriptures you’ve not yet seen does it make me a better Christian because I see it no but if I can begin to see this stuff jesus said if you don’t see the earthly things Nicodemus how can you understand the heavenly things the first twelve chapters of John is merely training to climb the mountain of heavenly things the second half of the gospel we’re going to learn how to see what we haven’t seen and by so doing began to trust this god of ours who’s going to show us things we don’t even know our see Wow I’m you’ll have to forgive me I get excited about this stuff I have no idea where we are in your notes can you find a place and my page numbers are different in yours because I had to type mine mine is five times bigger than yours so I can see it with my bad eyes and so my page from footnote 21 page 27 footnote 21 perfect thank you those people are watching this video are really gonna be lost with this I apologize to them but we’re having a good time I’m sorry outside of the parable of the Good Samaritan the only time Jericho is mentioned in the Gospels is the single time Jesus passed through Jericho on his way to Jerusalem for Palm Sunday in Holy Week in addition to healing the blind man Luke’s Gospel includes the encounter with the kiyose as the last physical event before arriving in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday in the church still to this day the last gospel reading on the Sunday before the first Sunday of the Tri odeon journey to Palm Sunday and Holy Week is the Gospel of Zacchaeus this is to save the bridge in the Gospels between part one baptism and part to the events of Holy Week is Jesus passing through Jericho from east of the Jordan on his way to Jerusalem let us now turn to John in his gospel even at now that’s how we got catechesis Matthew Mark Luke and John are the catechesis of the church they didn’t create the catechesis we didn’t create catechesis from the from them the Bible we had the catechesis and the catechesis became the New Testament became the Gospels you Mark and Luke came out of the church in the written form let us now turn to John in his gospel even as the oral catechesis of the church as well as the liturgical catechesis of the cycle became the basis in both structure and content for Mark’s written gospel likewise the oral mr. Godsey of the church became the basis in both structure and content for John’s gospel the oral instruction that was being given after paska to everyone that had just been baptized will become eventually the written Gospel of John in the same way that the oral instruction that was given before pasca became the catechesis that we find in Matthew Mark and Luke in John’s Church ad paska on great and holy pasta st. John would proclaim in the beginning was the word and the Word was with God and the Word was God he was in the beginning with God all things were made through him and without him nothing was made that was made in him was life and the life was the light of men and the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it there was a man sent from God whose name was John this man came for a witness to bear witness of the light that all through him might believe he was not the light but was sent to bear witness of that light that was the true light which gives light to every man coming into the world he was in the world and the world was made through him and the world did not know him he came to his own and his own did not receive him but as many as received him to them he gave the right to become the children of God to those who believe in his name who were born not of blood nor the will of the flesh nor of the will of man but of God and the word became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld his glory the glory as of the only begotten of the Father full of grace and truth John bore witness of him and cried out this was he of whom I said he who comes after me is preferred before me for he was before me and of His grace we have all received and grace for grace for the law was given through Moses but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ no one has seen God at any time the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father he has declared him that was his homily at pasca today that is the gospel that is read at pasca the gospel read at Easter is not a gospel of the Resurrection we’ve already dealt with that it is the beginning of the mystic Gajic Gospel of John in the beginning was the logos and the logos was with God and the logos was God beginning to tell us who this Christ really is and who he really was when he walked this earth with us his apostles and disciples and on the Sundays after paska Saint John would tell his parish of how Thomas wasn’t there and a week later became a mighty believer he told a Mary Magdalene being an eyewitness of the resurrection mistaking the risen Savior for a gardener he told of the paralytic the man for 38 years at the pool he told of the healing of the man born blind beginning with pasca the day of resurrection john expounded on living a resurrected life in the world of life by the power of him who is the way the truth and the life no one presented the mr. Gajic experience of the gospel as did john bishops of the other churches in turkey urge st. john to commit his teachings to writing which st. john did his mr. Godsey teaching became the written Gospel of John his epistles touched on living the mr. Gajic life his revelation contains a first-hand account of the mr. Gajic experience of worship in the divine liturgy to this day beginning with pasca in the church to this day beginning with Tosca and the succeeding Sundays until Pentecost either a passage from John’s Gospel or from his epistle is read every Sunday during the Divine Liturgy during the fifty days from pasca to Pentecost the Gospel of John is read in its entirety in the daily services of the church the 50 days after pasca is the mr. Gajic period and it is the Gospel of John the mr. Gajic Gospel that is read during those fifty days and as we shall discover of the Gospel of John he shares a similar structural passage parallel with the synoptic Gospels of baptism ministry the events of Holy Week the first half of John which we shall call earthly things begins with the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptizer and concludes with the return beyond the Jordan before arriving in Jerusalem as in the synoptic Gospels John Gospel contains that Bridge of Jesus returning to the east of Jordan in John’s account the journey from the east of Jordan to Jerusalem for Holy Week does not mention Jericho instead John mentions Jesus coming to Bethany to raise Lazarus and to be anointed by Mary of Bethany the second half of John which we shall call heavenly things begins on Thursday of Holy Week and concludes with resurrection appearances so the synoptic Gospels the mr. Gajic gospel the liturgical cycle of the church all share this common structural feature the division containing the events of Holy Week always begins with Jesus having returned to the east beyond the Jordan where his public ministry had begun with his baptism by John the forerunner the [Applause] journey from east of the Jordan to Jerusalem takes Jesus through Jericho in the Synoptics and Bethany and John given the catechetical nature of Great Lent the encounter of Christ with Zacchaeus in Jericho is always the gospel for the Sunday before the tri odeon of Great Lent begins the Synoptics John and the liturgical cycle make it quite clear that the events of Holy Week are separate and distinct and not merely a continuation of what has gone before as Jesus told Nicodemus if I told you earthly things and you do not believe how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things now we are adults we have a pace let me ask you we’re scheduled to go a little longer to about 8:45 but I’m ready for a break if you are I think there’s some coffee and if a break would be nice let’s take if you a nature break down the hall the restrooms are down there let’s stretch stand up let the blood circulate a little and I will call us back in about 10 minutes and I will start will that be okay let’s do that then thank you brings us to chapter 4 our last chapter we’re going to look at this evening mr. Godsey is not catechesis Christian catechesis prepared catechumens for their baptism and first receiving of the Eucharist at Pascal these two events baptism and the partaking of the Eucharist are bookends of the catechesis the catechesis shows Christian baptism to be rooted in the baptism of Jesus by John the forerunner while the Eucharist is shown to be instituted by Jesus at the Last Supper Marc took the catechesis of the church expanded the baptism with public ministry information and fleshed out the events of Holy Week Matthew and Luke took Mark’s Gospel and inserted more parables and teaching material and created their Gospels known as the synoptic Gospels the three Gospels Matthew mark and Luke contain and are designed to transmit the basic catechesis of the church following their baptism and for Eucharist at paska the newly baptized Christians began a period of mr. Gajic instruction that led them into a deeper understanding and experience of the resurrected life they now had in Christ John’s Gospel contains the mr. Gajic instruction of the church John’s Gospel is not catechesis John’s Gospel is mr. Gajic John’s Gospel contains the same two-part division as the Synoptics the baptism and public ministry their return beyond the Jordan and then the events of Holy Week but John’s Gospel is specifically written for those who are already baptized Christians who already know the basic story of Jesus that they might now enter and experience living the resurrected life now available to them catechesis is not at odds with mr. Gajic they are complimentary they complete each other a brief exercise of tracing on a map the chronological movement of Jesus in the katha catechol Gospel of Mark and likewise the movements of Jesus in John are going to demonstrate this for us so there is no homework but we’re going to take time out right now and if you look on your page there you’ll see a map do you not a map on page 34 that says map exercise 1 and right before it it should have from baptism to beyond the synoptic right you’ve got 24 places identified all of these are from the Gospel of Mark this is the itinerary of mark so number one is Nazareth so look on your map and see if you can start at Nazareth near the top somewhere right up in that Galilee and then from there before you move your pencil or your ink pen see if you can find Bethabara it’s if you see the Dead Sea near the bottom look right above it to the right on the east side of the Jordan do you find that to find it maybe so he traveled from Nazareth down to Bethabara and was baptized by John and then it says he went to the wilderness for the temptation outside of Jericho so you see Jericho so he went over towards Jericho crossed over the Jordan River the Mount of temptation is there and after the time of temptation it says in the Gospel of Mark he then went up to the Sea of Galilee boy that’s way up north along the Jordan see the Sea of Galilee up there and then it says he went to Capernaum Capernaum is the city on the top side of the Sea of Galilee see where we are and then it says he traveled throughout all of Gavin leases and you could just kind of draw you a big circle around that Galilean territory that’s identified there and came back to Capernaum and then he’s in the Sea of Galilee area and then item number 9 he’s on a mountain usually identified as Mount Tabor now it’s not on your map but a bore is located if you go to the south end of the Sea of Galilee and head over before you get to the H on Nazareth it’s about there so you could put a dot there for the mountain that he came to he came to that mountain III have to kind of keep moving you can do this at home on your own but I just were going to get us somewhere tonight so we can go home on time if it’s all right then he goes back on number 10 till he’s back home to Capernaum have I lost everybody item number 11 now he’s teaching on the Sea of Galilee now he’s going to go to the Gerasenes or Ghidorah you see it over there to the right kind of underneath the Sea of Galilee and in that big spot to the right and from there he’s going to go back up to the north side of the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum and now he’s going to go kind of along the coastline of the Sea of Galilee on the left side to get Nazareth and then he’s going to take a trip to tyre for the syrophoenician lady that’s clean at the top of your map right against the Mediterranean Sea that he says Tyrus had been a Latin spelling of the city of Tyre and then he’s going to come down to Bethesda that’s back down near Capernaum and then he’s going to go to assess areal that’s clean over on the it says Samaria in the middle and if you go up above it and look to the left along the Mediterranean Sea you’ll find Caesarea and then he’s back to the high mountain that’s Mount Tabor that we spoke of over knew the end of the H on Nazareth then he’s back up making a trip all the way around Galilee and then item number 20 he returned to beyond the Gordon that’s down at Bethabara that’s that’s always the phrase beyond the Jordan is where he was where John was baptizing at the first and that’s his baptism and then he’s on the road to Jericho and item 22 is when he arrives in Jericho and then he’s going to go to Beth aids in the Mount of Olives they’re not on the map and then he will arrive finally at Jerusalem so whether or not we got every one of those dots you’ve got a rough picture it probably looks something like that right I mean it just looks like he went from here to there and all around up here and then came back down and like a lollipop if you want or cotton candy the picture is this okay and then finally see he’s back where he started and then he crosses the Jordan goes to Jericho and comes to Jerusalem so it looks something like that is what you’ve done now if you’ll flip your page over to the next map you’ll find one that’s available it says John’s map on it right you find another map we’re going to do the same thing according to John we’re not according to John’s Gospel Jesus was here and then he went there than there so number one he starts beyond the Jordan Mathare Brooke for the baptism that’s where the Gospel of John starts you find that again above the Dead Sea right secondly he goes to Galilee towards Galilee so up to the top and then he goes to Cana of Galilee that’s kind of above Nazareth do you see Cana and then he goes down to Jerusalem you see Jerusalem straight down and then he went around or through the area of Judea down here to the south kind of draw a circle and then he went up to Samaria you see Sekar let’s jacobs well the lady at the well and then he goes up to Galilee and now he’s going to go to Cana of Galilee again so back to Cana now he’s going to come back down to Jerusalem down south now in number 10 he’s gone back up to Galilee and then down to that high mountain that’d be it the where the a chisel Nazareth and then he goes up to Capernaum and around Galilee and then item number 14 he goes to Jerusalem he’s at the Mount of Olives that’s in Jerusalem 16 he’s still in Jerusalem 17 he’s in Jerusalem and then he returns to where he was baptized at Bethabara we know that signals to us the end of that whole portion and then number 19 he’s crossed the Jordan River Bethany here it would be just outside of Jerusalem before getting there the little city of Ephraim is not on there but he goes to Jerusalem and then he will go back to Ephraim just outside I mention that to you because those of you who are familiar with st. Elijah our priest emeritus father Constantine Nasser his village is the village of Ephraim the village that Jesus went to after the Muslims have conquered the area it has changed its name and its name is now ty B but ty B is the modern name for the ancient biblical city of Ephraim where Jesus in the Gospel of John went after he went into Jerusalem and came back out we only know that because we know father Constantine and that’s his hometown and the family has lived there for 500 years then 21 he goes back to Bethany this is before the anointing by Mary of Bethany and then he will go in 22 to Jerusalem for Holy Week now your map this time probably and I’ve been told red doesn’t show up real good so I should have used blue but if you can see that at all it probably just looks like this right it okay that brings me to the page right after your last map if you want to follow along having worked the map exercises as directed above a comparison of the two completed maps should now make visually apparent the itinerary reported in mark is completely irreconcilable to the itinerary of John I mean you just can’t mix those two together right yes I mean your eyes see that okay so what’s going on as to why this is so the answer is because Mark had a completely different purpose in writing his gospel from the purpose John had in writing his gospel mark was teaching instructing his followers of the basic facts who what when where and who said what that’s catechesis and what happened John on the other hand assumed his readers his class knew nuke K any W left off the K on knew didn’t we he assumed that his readers knew the information mark provided John’s purpose was to enlighten his followers to understand the significance the meaning and the ramifications of what Jesus said and did from this map study at the very least it is obvious the story of Jesus is being told from two different perspectives John and the Synoptics are not at odds with each other they are written from a different perspective because they have a different audience the Synoptics are written to the unbaptized catechumens the folks in Zalman Oy John is written to the neo Faust his first histoy the newly illumined baptized Christians the Synoptics use a chronological narrative in order to teach the basic story of Jesus John takes the newly baptized Christians over the material in an unfamiliar way in order that the deeper meaning hidden within the story might be revealed as we begin we do not have to define the difference between catechesis and mr. Gajic nor do we have to tonight understand the difference between the synoptic Gospels and John it is enough to know there is a difference if tonight you leave here knowing there’s a difference that’s what we’ve done tonight there is a difference between the Synoptics and the Gospel of John this is catechesis this is mr. Godsey Wow therefore we can relax and say okay I’ve been baptized I’ve received the Eucharist I haven’t got this year so I’m willing to sit in John’s mr. Godsey class and begin to have him initiate me into the mystery of what it is to be a follower of Jesus Christ all that is required after tonight is that we will place ourselves in John’s hands as he gently leads us into the mr. Gajic understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ we’re in for quite a journey quite a trip this is going to be fun now let me just say this and I’ll probably say it again in a week or two we have and this is my closing thought tonight we have on the ceiling of our church the icon of I Elijah when he called down the fire from heaven on that altar in order for that fire to be called down on the altar they built the altar first they hauled the logs there they dug the trench they built it they hauled water there because it hadn’t rained and Elijah didn’t want there to be any hint that it was so dry that any spark would have ignited it they hauled big full barrels of water dumped it all over and it was only after they had done the hard work that God heard the prayer and sent the fire from heaven so some weeks we’re going to do hard work we’re just gonna slug it out as it were why did I come tonight this was a little dull and next week the fire can fall we never know when it’s going to fall and we never know if it’s going to fall on us tonight of the person sitting beside us that we come and I promise you this if you will come and guard your Monday nights and come bring your book God will be faithful to honor your hard work and the fire will fall god bless you for being here for a week one I look forward to seeing you again as we start week two god bless you [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music]
